Green Methods for Mold Prevention and Removal

Molds are often found in commercial buildings and homes due to an abundance of indoor moisture. These growths are actually a type of fungus. Its tiny spores travel through the air and reproduce in wet locations of a structure. It is also an irritant and allergen and is known to cause health problems. This fungus can become lodged in lungs and cause obstructive lung disease. It is also known to cause irritation to the ears, eyes, and nose. Often, fungus will exacerbate the symptoms of those with allergies or asthma. Specifically, fungus produces mycotoxins, and long term exposure may also cause neurological conditions and even result in death. When fungus is detected on any surface in a home or office building, it is best to remove it immediately. Keep in mind that fungus is not always easily seen and may go undetected in HVAC ducts or walls.

Environmentally Friendly Steps for Mold Removal

Instead of using harsh chemicals like borax or bleach for fungi removal, you can go green with environmentally friendly, natural ways to get rid of these fungi growths. This way, there won’t be any detrimental effects on family members, pets or the environment.

  • Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is an effective solution. With just two teaspoons mixed with two cups of water, it lasts a long time. Simply spray the solution directly onto the fungus. It does have a powerful odor; however, the odor loses its potency within a few days.
  • Vinegar: If the smell of vinegar bothers you, just add a few drops of essential oil or dilute with water and scrub the mold surface. Vinegar is highly effective, and studies have revealed that it not only prevents the growth of fungus, but also kills up to 82 percent of spores.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide can be used alone or in conjunction with vinegar. Spray the solution onto the mold surface and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes. Then, scrub clean with a damp cloth to removal any residua l spores.
  • Citrus Seed Extract: Citrus seed extract is another green solution for mold removal. Unlike tea tree oil and vinegar, it doesn’t have an unpleasant odor. Mix two cups of water with approximately 15 drops of extract. Directly spray the solution onto the mold.
